Collision Equations

Collision Equations

For a one-dimensional elastic collision with body 2 initially at rest, all velocities below are signed components along the collision axis.

v→1,f=m1-m2m1+m2v→1,i
v→2,f=2m1m1+m2v→1,i

If the two masses are equal:

v→1,f=0
v→2,f=v→1,i

If the mass initially at rest is very large:

v→1,f≈-v→1,i
v→2,f≈2m1m2v→1,i

If the mass initially at rest is very small:

v→1,f≈v→1,i
v2,f≈2v→1,i

mn= Mass of body n (kg)
v→n,i= Initial velocity of body n (m/s)
v→n,f= Final velocity of body n (m/s)
