Derive the complete reciprocal-trig suite

No calculator

Angles x are in radians. You may use (sin x)′ = cos x, (cos x)′ = −sin x, (1)′ = 0, the quotient rule, and sin²x + cos²x = 1. Derive the requested rules from identities rather than citing memorized tan, cot, sec or csc derivative formulas.

(a) Rewrite tan x, cot x, sec x and csc x as quotients involving only sin x, cos x and 1. Derive all four derivative rules by showing each quotient-rule numerator and denominator, simplify using identities, and state each original nonzero-denominator domain. State why the unscaled rules require radian inputs.

FUN-3.B.3

(b) Evaluate the four derivatives exactly at x = π/3. Then explain which original functions are undefined at x = 0 and at x = π/2, and why a simplified derivative formula cannot supply derivatives at excluded inputs.

FUN-3.B.3

(c) Use csc x = 1/sin x and its quotient-derived derivative to find the value and tangent slope at π/2. Sketch y = csc x on 0 < x < π with its tangent there, endpoint asymptotes, minimum point, and decreasing/increasing intervals. Explain why zero slope here is not an undefined derivative.

Diagnose a quotient sign or domain error

No calculator

For radian x, csc x = 1/sin x and (sin x)′ = cos x. The quotient derivative is (u′v − uv′)/v².

(a) Choose the line that correctly derives the cosecant derivative from this identity while retaining the original function’s domain.

Represent the interval rate and its limiting tangent

No calculator

A position model is s(t) = t² − 4t + 7 meters, for t in seconds. Consider the average rate on [3,6], the instantaneous rate at 3, and the derivative function. Use limiting difference quotients rather than the power rule.

(a) Calculate the average rate on [3,6] from endpoint values. Write both [s(3+h) − s(3)]/h and [s(t) − s(3)]/(t − 3) as average-rate expressions and simplify them on their nonzero-increment domains. Explain why setting h = 0 in the original quotient does not calculate an average rate.

CHA-2.ACHA-2.A.1CHA-1.A.2

(b) Represent s′(3) in both limiting difference-quotient forms and evaluate the finite two-sided limits. Then represent the derivative function s′(t) using lim(h → 0)[s(t+h) − s(t)]/h and derive it by expansion. Explain the difference between the derivative function and its value at 3.

CHA-2.BCHA-2.B.1CHA-2.B.2

(c) On 2 ≤ t ≤ 6, sketch the position curve, the secant through its points at 3 and 6, and the tangent at 3. Give both line equations and label their slopes with units. Explain why the average rate 5 m/s does not make the instantaneous rate at 3 equal to 5 m/s.
